The step by step guide to getting a podcast

There are three steps involved in setting up your personal computer to receive podcasts.

1. Get your podcast software

You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer.

This software is usually free, here are some popular ones below to try:

Lets use iTunes as an example:

2. How to subscribe to podcasts

Once you have the iTunes software installed you need to subscribe to some podcasts.

Here is a rough guide on how to subscribe i f you're using iTunes as your preferred software.

•  Open up iTunes from your desktop

•  Click on Podcasts on the left hand side

•  Click on Advanced – on the top browser

•  Click on Subscribe to Podcast

This will bring up a box asking for your URL

You need to paste in the URL from the website holding the podcast you're interested in.

Usually if a website has a podcast available to subscribe to, it will have a logo which looks like this or this

If you visit the Shed Dwellers website www.sheddwellers.co.uk and click onto the ‘orange XML' logo – it will open up a new page, showing the coding and will give you the ‘URL' or address of the podcast in your browser at the top.

Example: http://feeds.blastpodcast.com/sheddwellers/index.xml

All you need to do then is paste the URL (example one above) into the box open in iTunes

iTunes will automatically pull down all the podcasts related to that URL.

3. Listen to the audio

When a new episode becomes available for the podcast you have subscribed to, your software will automatically download it.

For audio, you can then listen to this episode on your computer or transfer it to your portable player i.e. iPod or MP3 to listen to later.

Note that for video, the episode should play on your computer but will only play on certain portable players and mobile phones.

If you decide that you no longer want to receive podcast episodes then it should be very easy to unsubscribe.

Again, how you do this will depend on your software, but you should look for "Clear" or "Unsubscribe" options.
